What matters in life
I believe it was the actor Jim Carrey who said, “I hope everybody could get rich and famous and will have everything they ever dreamed of, so they will know that it’s not the answer.” For someone worth more than 150 million dollars to make a quote like that is eye opening. When we’re younger we watch our parents chase money, and then as teenagers we start saving for a car, college, and trying to move out etc.… As you move out the real fun begins because now, you’re struggling just to survive. I think it’s safe to say that most of our life is focused on money until we’re finally mature enough to realize it’s not even the correct goal.
Does that mean we neglect money and pretend it doesn’t matter? No, not at all! In fact, I hope you hit your goals in that area one day, but there’s things that matter so much more! I heard a question asked that really put it in perspective. The question goes like this, “If I gave you $10,000,000 but you wouldn’t wake up tomorrow would you take it?”. Of course not! Then simply waking up tomorrow is worth more than $10,000,000! I know that’s an extreme example, but the point is our health means more than money. The irony is most people chase money when they’re young even if it cost them health, and as they get older they will spend every penny to regain what health they can.
What else matters more than money in life? I would argue that having a couple of solid relationships matters more. For example, I’m still close with my parents and that’s valuable to me. My wife Rose has been amazing for all 15 years of our marriage so far, and raising my kids is really important to me. Then there’s other relationships from there that may be a little weaker but still very important overall. Extended family for example, and people I used to know in College etc.…. I don’t know if you’d agree or not, but relationships are really important in life for myself.
Making a positive impact in other peoples lives also matters a lot. Every interaction with a stranger or even people we sort of know can be so powerful. When you think about the ones who’ve made a lasting impact it’s often because they were selfless, kinds, loving, and patient when they didn’t have to be. It’s people who help other people. This is actually a good point to bring it full circle. I do hope you gain enough money to be a generous giver in life! I hope you think about others at least as much as you do yourself.
The final and most important thing that actually matters is to know God and make God known. None of this is meant to be done alone. We were created on purpose for a purpose! Every human is valuable because we’re made in the image of God. I pray that whoever reads this will be reminded of Gods amazing love for you, and be encouraged to find your purpose in Him.
